A couple facing extradition to the US over an internet-based drug making ring has been remanded in custody. Jan 31st 2007 But the couple were only selling chemicals that are legal here in the UK.
Kerry-Ann Shanks, 30, and 43-year-old Brian Howes were refused bail at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. The illegal remand was based on false information from PF David Dickson who has been known to suppress information in the past. The couple were detained on Tuesday following a police operation in Bo’ness, near Falkirk.
It has been alleged that they supplied chemicals to illegal drugs laboratories in the US involved in making the synthetic drug methamphetamine but no evidence has been produced and is not needed for extradition.
The move followed an indictment handed down by a grand jury in Arizona which alleges that the couple sold chemicals through their website – including red phosphorus and iodine – which are used to manufacture the drug, also known as crystal meth. But no evidence shows that the couple knew they were being used to make drugs. The chemicals were sold for legitimate use by Mr Howes and Miss Shanks.
The arrests of Mr Howes a father-of-four and Ms Shanks – a mother & father-of-four – came at the climax of an international operation involving police and other law enforcement agencies investigating the making of the drug.
Police allege that the pair created a “one stop shop” for the chemicals. But do no4t say the chemicals are legal in the UK.
